Brief introduction:
The lay direction of a wire rope refers to the twisting direction of the wires in the wire rope. If the spiral rising direction of the strands is from right to left, it is left-hand lay, which can be represented by the S symbol. The winding direction of the steel wires in the steel strand is counterclockwise. Looking from one end of the steel strand, the steel wires show a left-rising spiral shape.
For example, in a common left-lay steel strand, the spiral pattern of its steel wires is similar to a left-handed thread.

Mechanical properties:
In some special application scenarios, when a left-lay steel strand is subjected to torsional forces, the internal stress distribution is different from that of a right-lay one, and it may exhibit different anti-torsion properties. However, this difference is not very obvious in most conventional applications.
Appearance:
The spiral pattern of the left-lay steel strand is significantly different from that of the right-lay one, and this can be easily distinguished visually. In some occasions where appearance requirements exist or different uses of steel strands need to be distinguished, this appearance difference is very important.
